PEDESTRIAN SAFETY TIPS
Always walk on the sidewalk - if there is no sidewalk and you have to walk on the road, always walk FACING Traffice, so you can see cars traveling on the road.
Dress to be seen. Brightly colored clothing/costumes makes it easier for drivers to see you during the day. At night, you need to wear special reflective material on your costume, shoes, cap or jacket to reflect headlights of cars coming towards you.
Go with a group. Stay together in a group. It is much easier for drivers to see a large group of children who are trick or treating. Stay together and hold hands of young children when walking along a roadway.
Carry a flashlight. If you are trick or treating at dusk or at night, take a flashlight with you. It will help light the way on uneven sidewalks or pavement and will also help motorists see you.
Talk to children about safety. Before Halloween, talk to children about walking safely. Remind them that they are sharing roadways with drivers and they must be cautious and remember to follow the safety rules.
COSTUME SAFETY TIPS
Make sure the costume fits. Do not allow children to wear costumes that are too loarge or too small. Costumes with pieces hanging down on the ground may cause a child to fall on the street. A costume that is too small may also cause a child to be distracted or to fall.
Make sure children can see. Select a costume that does not block a child’s vision. Many masks may not allow a child to easily see where he/she is going.
Be seen. Select a costume with bright colors. If it is a dark colored costume, put retro-reflective tape or lights on the costumer. It is important to wear brightly colored costumes both during the day and night.
